It varies @Sheal - I think I paid £45 for my last one, but have seen them advertised from about £25 up

Yep, that's the one (Austin/Morris 1100). I felt like doing that, quite often

With today's sophisticated diagnostics 90 percent plus of faults should be able to be accurately diagnosed. I have top end Autel kit that will pinpoint very nearly all fault codes. Rather than just telling an oxy sensor is down it will tell exactly which one and its current performance status.

Catalytic converters can be checked quite easily with a simple surface heat measuring device. So the expensive Cat can be ruled in or out in just a few minutes.

Sadly most garages use the diagnostics to make money.

Thanks @fat controller , it's 23 years since my last one and in the not to distant future they'll be happening again. :doh:I didn't realise the price differed, I thought it was set by the government.

        Update.........

After driving my car up the motorway and back to get the engine hot at 7.00am this morning, I then took it for another MOT. The garage called mid-morning to say that it had passed. Yey!!!

I believe that it used to be set by the government, but now it is left to the garage (possibly capped though?)

Great news! Its not uncommon for cars to need a good old clear out from time to time, and now it seems you have found yourself a decent wee garage should you need any work done in the future.

Garages can charge up to £54.85 for an MOT. Many charge less in the hope of getting the repair business.

This poses a problem for the person and the garage. The garage wants your business and may want to charge as little as they need to in order to balance profit with price. This creates the 'barrier' where a customer may think it's so cheap that the garage may be intending to make a false report to get extra work. It's a "Catch 22" situation.

Our local garage, who knows we always give them any work necessary (and have done so for over 30 years) charge £46. Little jobs needed during the year, such as changing light bulbs, are never charged for. :blue thumb:

Good independent garages are worth their weight in gold - sure, they might not have swanky showrooms, but swanky showrooms don't fix cars, good mechanics do; and in fairness, whilst there will always be some rip off merchants out there, the vast majority of them rely on repeat business and word of mouth to make their living - - not worth their while to shaft anyone to make a quick buck only to lose customers in the long run

I hate moving areas, it means starting over again with new businesses and the trial and error that goes with it. Okay there will be word of mouth from new neighbours etc. but you can't always rely on that either.
