With a raised bed you would need a gap at the back to stop the fence rotting away, so I'd say in your situation a raised bed is not the easiest solution. Also you would need a fair bit of soil to fill up the raised beds. As you say a paving edge would look just as nice.

What are you intending to grow in there? If you are after deep rooted plants (vegetable) then maybe a raised bed is the way to go otherwise a shrub/flower border should be just fine as is.

      Cheers JWK,

Would I need to add concrete in a little trench before adding the paving?

Regarding soil bed, I am fairly open to suggestions. Mostly thinking about colourful flowers and shrubs that are easily maintained.

for shrubs that are easy to maintain and that offer flowers and are evergreen i would go for hebes.

Hydrangeas, lavender and buddleias are also very easy to maintain with pruning only once a year.

Sedums are also easy and drought tolerant and hardly need any attention

Best way to do it is dig out the soil, add hardcore then compact down and bed the bricks on mortar. But that's a fair bit of work and only necessary if it was walked on a lot. I've got away with scooping out the loose soil and bedding the bricks on a scoop of mortar.

Cheers! I will probably use nice paving squares with the rounded edges. I only want to do it once so hardcore and mortar it will be! Will do a bit of research over the next week or so and start planning it.

@Sirius it works very well as long as you have a good depth of soil. I have at least 18 inches of soil and currently I'm enjoying some lovely Carrots which have been growing in this bed. I have enormous Parsnips in it too. I certainly wouldn't be planting any type of tree or deep rooted shrub in a bed like this 1 but it's fine for vegetables. While raised beds can look quite good in the right situation, isn't it very difficult to mow the grass when the wooden edge is at a higher level? To me it's so much easier to have edging at the same height as the grass so you just mow over it.

Just one thing to bear in mind, if your lawn is mossy then it's likely that certain areas of the garden are quite shady, so you should choose appropriate plants depending on the aspect :)
