Thank you for pointing out the error in the homeless link I gave...I posted the wrong one and have now corrected this to give the reasons that people become homeless in the UK.

Re: Armandii 's comment - it was made regarding me taking Jiffy's comment literally (when Jiffy said he had no teeth due to his unfortunate experiences). I did not realise that it was meant metaphorically! Ha! So I got that wrong but I dispute the comment that I am "losing us from the thread"....Armandii made that in reference to the Jiffy situation that I mentioned so it would seem that you have not read subsequent posts that have moved on ....?

I have reservations about your posts too shiney, i.e. I have found that they can come across as glossing over someone's situation in the overriding desire to make a joke. Whatever. [IMG]

Rosebay do you think none of us can see what is going on.?

I think we all know there are genuine homelessness cases, but they are far out-weighed by the beggars on the streets touting for money for their habits..

To be honest I think most genuinely homeless people do not beg like the ones who sit in doorways, a-cost you when you are walking by or even threaten you if they don't think it is enough..!!! So as I say I stick to giving to the Sally Army and other local homeless charities..

Whilst I would agree with you that aggressive begging (i.e. being accosted - which is not the most common form of begging) is more likely to be related for supporting habits, I am not so sure that standard begging is mostly about this....even beggars need food and drink! I would personally suspend my judgement on such a conclusion until I have heard what a homeless spokesman would have to say on the matter since it is otherwise obviously assumptions/guesswork.

I think Rosebay that we will all have to agree to disagree on this one, this is going nowhere... We all give in the way we want to give and I can assure you I certainly do..!! So on that note I have no more to say on this topic.......

Yes, metaphorically speaking, and when you have been kicked around like we have you learn not to trust anyone after 18 years, and, being now the problems have gone the not trusting in people is still there, by the way we do still have are teeth :)

Thank you for this reply. I am pleased to read that you were describing a past situation and not how it is now with you! [IMG]

My view on charity is fairly straightforward - I only give to the British Red Cross and British Legion.

I don't have to be asked - I send any 'spare' money I have to them using the internet.

I don't give to any one else standing on a street corner or at the entrance to shops etc. I sometime think that they play on my guilt by asking "Do you want to help the (what ever)". Surely only a heartless monster would say no? I say no - without any guilt - I'm donating to other causes.

Why the British Red Cross you may ask. We'll they came to the rescue some years back now. Because of them I was discharged early from hospital and could spend Christmas with my family. They simply loaned me a wheelchair - no charge - for as long as I needed it. I've not forgotten this one simple act after all these years.

I give regularly to animal charities, but give to smaller charities run by volunteers and where the money goes directly to helping animals. The main one I donate to each month is Dogstar Foundation which was set up by someone I know and the work they do really does make a difference to the lives of the animals.

I sometimes give when people are doing something in the office for charity (but not always) or to the likes of Comic Relief.

I never give to so called 'chuggers' (charity muggers) who walk round with clipboard. They get paid a commission for every person they sign up.

I see this has become about donating to charities. I rather hoped for more feedback on whether or not people are less inclined to give directly to beggars in light of what is mentioned in the original post.

You must understand, RB, that, when posting a thread on a certain line of thought on a subject, that many people have many different views that create different paths leading to different angles of the subject. So when you ask a question don't always expect a direct answer to that question......Life is not like that, i.e: Black and White, so you will get back answers that you didn't expect but will lead to a broadening of your view and thoughts.:heehee:

Of course I understand this! I am familiar with forums and how threads can meander from topic. It was just my way of returning it back on track that's all. [IMG]
