    Hi all,

Is there a website I could use to identify various trees? Ideally something with "typical" pictures of a wide range of trees found in the UK. If I don't have much luck I'll post here and ask for specific identifications, but I've got a LOT of plants in my new garden I'd like to identify, and it'd be a bit unfair to expect you lot to go through them all!

    Cheers,

    Amanensia

I am also looking to identify trees/shrubs. I visited a friend of a friends garden where there was what I thought was a lovely tree. The lady said it was a Newzealand Lilac so I came home and bought one. But I am disappointed in the size of my flowers are there different types or do the flowers grow bigger as the tree grows. Any one know!!!

Hello Amanensia and welcome to GC.

Here is a site I find very useful .... Tree & Shrub ID

Derwent, the New Zealand Lilac (Heliohebe hulkeana) is an unique type of Hebe ... there are many varieties available and you will find them listed in the link above.

I like the Tree and Shrub ID site, thanks for that link.

"it'd be a bit unfair to expect you lot to go through them all!"

Hi there Amanensia. The trouble is there are hundreds of trees grown in this country from all over the world. I would think that a book of trees & shrubs would be your best bet, Hilliers is the best but very expensive although Amazon are offereing used ones at good prices.

For a more general book of plants the RHS Encyclopedia of Plants and Flowers has everything from trees & shrubs to perennials & annuals. This is useful as the plants are catalogued according to size, flowering time and colour so it makes it easier to find a particular plant.

Derwent, the New Zealand Lilac is not actually a lilac but Heliohebe hulkeana.

    See here: http://www.rnzih.org.nz/pages/Heliohebe-hulkeana.htm

This might help - it runs out of pictures rather early in the ID process, and reverts to technical-ish words, but reversing and trying some alternate routes might work.

They have got some "If you got here and its not quite like this it might be XXX" links, but I could do with a bit more of that sort of help!!
