Anyone one here coping with this? My medication which I was doing so well on has now given me tinnitus. I feel like my head is bursting with noise, the only thing that seems to 'turn the volume down' is Diazepam. Anyone else have this and what do you find helps?
its one of those things that you have to learn to live with, worse thing for you is that your at the beginning of the journey so your mind does nothing other than focus on the noise. I think it took me about eight weeks to sleep properly again it really was driving me crazy. Day times were fine as the environment wasn't quite so didn't pay much attention but when it came to the bedroom and all was quite that's when the buzzing humming was worse. I had an operation to try and help mine but this caused some bad infections and led to a heart beat tinnitus which was a thousand times worse than the whistling, how i got through that for 12 months i never know.... 4 years later and its now part of me and we live ok together only now and then does it play on my mind and bug me Hope this doesn't sound to much like doom and gloom but its all about ignoring it and living with it Jamie
Had it from when i was a child (only a few years back honsest ), haven't found anything to get rid of it
Oh gosh @val, I'm really sorry to hear you have tinnitus, I have no personal experience myself but I just wanted to say I hope the doc can clear it up for you soon
Sorry to hear you're having a problem with it. You need to go back to the doc and see whether a change of medication will help. If not, then there's a possibility that a white noise generator might help. Your doctor should refer you to an audiologist to see whether something can be done to help. You could also contact the British Tinnitus Association. I've had tinnitus for over 50 years but, fortunately, not too badly. Some times are worse than others. When you're trying to sleep is usually the worst time. Having a CD player playing gentle music (depends on what you enjoy) can help you sleep. It masks the tinnitus to some extent and takes your mind off it. You could always have the radio on and set to a news programme. That can bore you to sleep! Good luck
Hi @val sorry that you are having a problem with this. I have the "whistling" constantly and agree with @bigbore that you will learn "not to hear it" eventually.
@shiney Yes, in the higher doses it is a side effect of the medication which I am taking. I am coming off the medication but I am finding this so distressing that I am worried that I have started something which is never going to stop!!!!
I hope it stops or reduces when you come off the medication. Sometimes, with coming off of drugs, the side effects last for a while.
I've suffered with it as long as I can remember. There is no such thing as silence and I need the radio on at night to get to sleep. As with Shiney it is sometimes worse than other times but when it's bad it stops me sleeping. I tried an implant which was a waste of time but it does work for some people.
Hi Val. sorry to hear you also have Tinnitus, I also suffer from Tinnitus and have done for many years. I have attended an Audiologist Clinic for some months and after all the information and help and equipment they have given me over the months it has helped me to live with it. The Audiologist gave me a small machine I found helpful,it works with batteries ,it gives of sounds like, Heart Beat,Sea Waves,Brook, Birds, Woods, Rain, White Noise. This machine can be placed at the side of your bed to ease the Tinnitus noise. There is also another machine which is placed under your pillow, similar to the above machine. I was informed there was no cure for my Tinnitus by the Audiologist that I would need to learn ' ' How To Live With It'. Personally I now use a Wall Clock. I place the clock at night on the wooden bedside cabinet at the side of the bed, it has a nice relaxing Tick from it, I concentrate on the ticking from the clock and I soon Nod Off. My Tinnitus was caused with working in a Plastics/Chemical Plant with high pitching heavy machinery that caused damage to the inner ear over the 34 years. Naturally the Tinnitus is always at its peak in a quiet environment ,you will require to mask the noise with another sound which you think pleasant which will take your mind off the Tinnitus noise which can vary from high pitched noises to humming noises, there are numerous forms of noises with Tinnitus. My Advice Val::::::: Go see an Audiologist you will get help , I did..
Thank you all so much for your replies, as my tinnitus is a side effect of the medication I am taking I am hoping/praying that once I get this drug out of my system my ears will return to normal. I cannot envisage living with this I would sooner be stone deaf!!!! The one thing I really like is peace and quiet and this 'brush' with what tinnitus is like has been unbelievably distressing for me. So it is now a waiting game........!!! Again thank you all for your suggestions!
I have it, not all the time fortunately, sometimes it`s a hum, sometimes the heartbeat, I have had ear problems all my life, deaf in one ear now, it is, as everyone says something you learn to live with, I have to see a consultant every 6 months or so as I had a growth in my ear canal, nearly killed me, and it`s actively monitored in case of a return, mentioned the tinitus but as it`s intermittent and slight they are not concerned.
Oh gosh @pamsdish, I'm so sorry you've had such a terrible time, thank goodness they are checking your ear every six months
Hi for anyone suffering with tinnitus I feel for you, I have had this since the 80's due to a noisy working environment. The medication I take does not help but I am on them for life, so I just have to live with it and try to find masking ways. It is a very depressing thing to come to terms with and there are help groups, I use music as an escape but know when I take the headphones off it'll still there. I have slight deafness as well but a hearing aid makes listening a mess, I also tend to shy away from busy environments like pubs etc. Does anyone have a cure.
i dont really suffer from this but while reading up on blocked sinus i came across a doc whowrote that he believed tinnitus was caused by a breakdown in brain sensors communicting properly (or something like that, im too tired to remember exactly right now) and he reckoned a brain food diet to get the brain back into health again would help fight tinnitus. Sounded reasonable to me. Goodluck guys.
