I have a 100 or so very small Oak/Chestnuts at work (from acorns and conkers). They were potted in a peat free coir/tree bark compost and are growing well. They are in the sun but in a sheletered spot. At the very young stage they should not be allowed to dry out.:)

I think I would just buy some JI no 3 add a bit of extra peat, say 25%,(most JI seems to turn to mud when it gets wet), and perhaps a bit of osmacote fertilizer.
Should last them for another year, and keep them moving.

I'd keep them in a sunny spot but not to let them dry out too much.

I have a number of trees grown from seed, and I grow them in Rose pots; these are deeper than normal, which gives the roots more depth to develop in.

Most of the trees I grew last year (from seed) got to over 5 feet in the year!

They are just in ordinary multi purpose compost (albeit deep pots, as indicated). I've got half a dozen Judas trees, Handkerchief trees, Indian bean, walnut - all have made 3' - 6' of growth in the first year. The only ones which haven't are the Maidenhair which are about 12" - 18" tall.

They were put under as little stress as possible - so completely sheltered from drying wind and so on; water at least daily, and fed quite frequently.
