Not sure about this forum, but I know another forum I used to use (not garden related), that once the bar was all red it meant it was full ...... would then have to delete stuff before you could upload anymore.

Am pressuming that all forum's would work the same

But then they would disappear from my posts, wouldn't they?

Explanation of Male and Female flowers on a Melons is not going to be much use without the pictures!!

(I thought there was a monthly allowance, or somesuch?)

(I thought there was a monthly allowance, or somesuch?) think thats on 3rd party servers usually

Usually on forums people will choose to use 3rd party servers, like photobucket as you do get a high limit and a monthly allowance that resets every month ... and if you use more than that, just open a second account linking to a 2nd email address and you get twice the amount :) and of course its free.

Same applies there though, if you delete anything from that account, you wouldnt see the picture any longer, just the red crosses ..... which is rather annoying when your reading old posts for reference!

I dont know if there is anything the mods can do, to increase users limit though ?

"like photobucket as you do get a high limit and a monthly allowance that resets every month"

Indeed, but its a major hassle compared to just attaching an image to a message ... and lots of old threads that I look at have "This image no longer on photobucket" pictures - which renders the thread useless too ...

Yes thats what happens when people delete the image off photobucket (same would happen if you deleted them off here). I do agree though that when this happens it makes old threads useless.

(I think) the reason there is set limits on forums is because whoever owns the forum has to pay for a certain size to the hosting server. If they gave everyone unlimited uploads this would use more of the package they have paid for, until it got to the point that they had to pay for more.

Photos obviously use a lot more kb's than text does hence the need for upload limits whereas text creates very little.

I am pretty sure thats how it all works anyway!

I dont know if any of the mods can increase certain users limit on an invididual bases though, so it might be worth sending a pm to a mod to ask. If the odd regular had a higher limit it probably wouldnt make that much difference to the overall package as a lot of users do not use the inbuit one anyway ...... am just not sure if it can be done per user though

"(I think) the reason there is set limits on forums is because whoever owns the forum has to pay for a certain size to the hosting server"

Used to be the case, disk space changes by ISPs is trivial these days

"obviously use a lot more kb's that text does"

Just checked and my average attachment size is 57K - its obviously open to abuse, but I resize my attachments, and reduce quality, appropriately before uploading.

"it might be worth sending a pm to a mod to ask"

A Moderator has already replied in this thread ... so I ain't holding my breath.

As usual, I don't understand most of what has been said.

I use photobucket and have put up nearly 2,000 pictures over the years I've been on here and never lost any from the threads. I didn't even know there was a limit on here. :cnfs:

It appears, form what has been said, that I don't need to worry as long as I do it through photobucket.

It only applies to images uploaded as thumbnails.

You could bypass all that by putting the image straight into the post using the [IMG] feature.

Anyway, I just increased the limit by about 150% so you shouldn't have any more problems. But let me know if you do.
