I think a illegitimate child file is just a coarse cut file.

If you are sharpening anything with tempered steel edges, or hardened steel you really need a carborundum stone or these days you can get diamond sharpening stones.

I still have all my engineering tools and some from the 50 / 60's, would cost an earth now as were over engineered back then

If you're trying to follow Nigel's link you will have to cut and paste it and then change the 'illegitimate child' part back into proper English. :snork:

Morning Pete, hmm how would i sharpen with a stone then? the same way as a file? (clamp spade, and sharpen with the stone like you do with a file? would you suggest a diamond stone then over a file, sounds expensive lol

oh you cant beat the tools from back in the days can you, built to last :)

Morning Nigel, thanks that link is handy

ah thank you, i can now view, not sure why the words get changed, its only the name of a file after all :(

Files used to come in first cut second cut and ba-s-tard grades , which was the coarsest.
What are you sharpening ? For my rotary lawnmower is use my 100mm disc grinder to re grind the blade every year . If you are resharpening say secateurs a good wetstone is what you need . You could use a diamond file , diamond is not expensive - only DeBeers made it seem that way with a superb advertising campaign - Diamonds are Forever.

And remember as with a knife if you want to sharpen its no use using something that is of no use, such as a blunt file or a stone that is past its best
