Hi everyone, ime looking fora bit of info on [FONT=&quot]Sassafras and Sarsparilla, i belive the are both a kind of tree or bush, anu info at all would be of use, and where to buy them would be brilliant.

Ime hoping to have a pop making the Sarsprlilla drink i loved so much as a child, not only for my self but also for my Grandchildren who have never even herd of it.

Also does anyone here have any experience of growin Hops?

:) Hello compo and welcome to GC.

I know Sasparilla well having lived in Alabama for 14 years ... but I don't know how to make it.

I find it strange at age 28 your grandchildren have never heard of it ... I assume you mean your future grandchildren ... :cnfs:

I believe there are some folk here who grow hops who may be able to assist you ... enjoy the forum.

Its a bit of a story Victoria, i am the youngest in my family, the oldest in my family is my big brother, who now has two lovely Grandchildren, who we all love to bits of course, but when he first became a Granddad i used to give him a bit of stick about it, well you have to do dont you, its what makes the world go round.

So when he became a Granddad for the first time, i gave him a prezy of Incontinence pants, Viagra, Thermal Granddad vest and long Johns, pipe and Tobacco etc, his revenge is that he has taught the Grandchildren to call me Granddad as well, and the name has stuck (but good) no matter how much i try to bribe the little tykes, they refuse to call me anything but Granddad, they are just old enough to realise thats its a flipping good game to call me Granddad, even my Birthday cards are to Granddad Pete. So i have given up the ghost, and now have to accept that ime a Grandad well before my time.

I owe him one, and ile think of something good......... eventually??????

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Hi Pete ... what a lovely story. I understand completely as I call my nephew Cousin and send him cards that say Cousin on them too. When he was a child, my Sister would shout Cousin Itt (from the Addams Family) as opposed to Peter if he was being naughty .. and it just stuck ... for over 40 years now! :hehe:

As for the sasparilla, why not introduce your 'grandchildren' to root beer as basically it's the modern day version of it and, if my memory serves me right, the supermarkets there sell it.

Ahhhhh, so root beer is similar to sarsparilla, (thanks for that Victoria), I always think it has a medicinal taste.:D

I seem to remember reading once that Sarsparilla is made/flavored with the roots of the sassafras tree, so hence root beer.
    Its all making sence now.

I've only seen a Sasafrass tree once in the UK, at Wisley.
But there must be other I would guess, but not that common really.
