We purchased a new bed which was delivered yesterday.
I dumped the old bed next to the hut, then phoned the local council for a special uplift.
The lady on the phone took all the details then said that would cost me £16 and any other items over 5 would cost me £5 each item.
I don't know how your local council work their special uplifts, but in our area in Scotland we have lived for 50 years and in the past we have been allocated 3 special uplifts a year at no extra charge.
Allegedly the system changed on January 1, this year with nobody being informed of the changes.
I know the councils are strapped for cash,(with the council tax/community charge frozen for the past 7 or 8 years.

personally I have always said this was a bad idea, and it would bite us on the bum in the future years, and this is only the start of it.

On the cards, Library closure, Public Toilet closure,Empty Shops,Roads full of pot holes not being repaired.Houses Badly Requiring attention, Etcetera Etcetera, Etcetera.

I could go on and on and on.

    How is your area ?

Have you seen a downturn in your Community?..

I've never heard the term "uplift ", I presume you mean bulky item removal.
Our council charge £30 for the call out and that covers everything from 1 item to a full load.

Our loony council brought in charges for uplifts years ago then cancelled the brown wheelie bins then closed our twice monthly recycling pickup.
So its a 22 mile round trip to the recycling yard now. And these dimwits wonder why theres fly tipping and everyone hates the Scottish Borders Council.

No matter where you live, it is all swings and roundabouts.

Yes, for items classified as "bulky items" we have to pay a fee. That didn't happen in my childhood days, but then, we didn't have Poll Tax then either. This year, council tax is expected to increase by, just slightly, under 4% (that is, just under 2% for the nominal increase + 2% simply to cover the "elderly care" element! I'm interested to know - although I think I already know the answer - if the national 2% increase is based on the pre-increase figure or the post increase figure ;))
            It's a "wits about you" society we're in and that's a fact!

Over here, we have "Big garbage" days about every 3 months. We can put 3 large items on the kerb for free pick up.

Lots of metal scavegenrs go round and reduce the rubbish. It's intersting to see the items some people grab...

Okay, one day I saw something I wanted and grabbed it....

Music, have you tried online groups such as Freecyclers, Freegle or trashnothing?

All of these groups aim to stop items from going to landfill sites by recycling them to other people who can make use of them. Some people have nothing and the offer of an old bed may help them to furnish an empty home.

If you can help someone out whilst stopping filling landfill sites, and avoiding a council pickup fee...can it get any better than that?

                  Steve...:)

Special uplfits are something Mrs JWK uses to defy gravity :)

I can't remember a time when our council ever took big things away for free. A few months ago I got rid of a bed at the local dump which costs nothing, just took me 15 minutes with a big hammer and a saw to bash it apart into small enough bits to fit in our hatchback.

Welcome to Tory Britain! And then they wonder why they are having to spend more and more on cleaning up fly-tipping

Today I heard a lot of noise on the pavement of bins being banged about, I could not believe what I seen..
There was a man with the council uniform on ,wearing big long rubber gloves rummaging through the bins making sure the rubbish in the bins was the proper rubbish for that colour of bin.
So to save money they have employed , I don't know the number of men they have employed,to go around checking all the bins before the bins are emptied by the bin men, who in turn have to wait till this long Gloved person gives the ALL CLEAR , if there is any contamination a large yellow label is attached to the bin to notify the bin men not to empty the bin with the Big Yellow Label.
The person who's bin has not been uplifted has to contact the council to arrange an uplift, without the contaminated rubbish, and they are required to pay £20 .

                        Big Brother Is Watching You.:yikes:.
