Hi! We have some Japanese Honesuckle plants that are one year old, but unfortunately the leaves are falling off as if it were the autumn. Even the small new leaves are falling off! Can anyone give me some advice?

    Kind regards
    Janet

Is it powdery mildew. Can you see any white patches , is it in a damp spot .

if so you are going to have to move it,
they like a sunny well drained position, prune it back and spray with a fungicide, burn all the leaves and cuttings ,

    Hi! Pam,
I sprayed for mildew etc a couple of weeks ago, but you got me thinking a bit when you mentioned about it being in a damp spot, as perhaps I have been giving them too much water. Also, I have been feeding them every week or so with the ready-to-pour Miracle plant food. Could I have been feeding them too much?

    Kind regards
    Janet

Hello Janet and welcome to GC.

I have three varieties of Honeysuckles and have never fed any of them ... one came from the UK with me ten years ago and was never fed there. Mine have to suffer all sorts of abuse ... torrential rain in the winter and hot, dry summers where hopefully I remember to water them .... :dh:

Here's one at the moment and we're up to 27c degrees ...

This was taken as a cutting from a friend of mine here about 3-4 years ago.

I think perhaps over-feeding and over-watering could be the problem.

Maybe it's too late for me to give you both an update on my Honeysuckle, but I decided to cut them down to about one and a half feet and then re-spray them for mildew. Two of the plants are down to the bare twigs and I'm a bit worried if they will grow again.

No its never too late ,some threads keep popping up,and if they are interesting somebody answers

Leave it be now, just water when you water everything else, and you should probably soon see some growth,

Plants are hardier than we think and the will to ilve is in all :luv:
