    Hello.

This is an orchid that I photographed on the island of Rhodes two weeks ago. Many of the orchids in my reference books look very similar so I wondered if there are any orchid afficianados out there who might know what it is?

Otherwise I'll just call it the Clown Orchid.

    Thanks

Some type of early spider orchid hybrid?

    *EDIT*
re-reads "photographed on the island of Rhodes" lol maybe not then =]

but it's definitely in the same family (Ophrys):gnthb:

It's from the Ophrys genus... but I'm not sure which species.... it's not Brittish native.

it could be the Woodcock orchid... Ophys scolopax attica

Ah yes, woodcock orchid was the closest I could find in my reference book and I read that O. umbilicata ssp. rhodia is called O. scolopax ssp. rhodia by Kew. At any rate, I think I'll still call it the Clown Orchid! Thanks to all.

Firstly, hello Martin and welcome to GC.

I think Aesculus has a good ID there but ...

... in my Med book I would have initially said Ophrys lapethica endemic to Cyrpus but I always like to double check on the net and it looks different there .... :cnfs:

My second thought is Ophrys attica ....

    ... but then there's O rhodia ....

... I say put all the little clowns in a lineup .... :hehe:

It's also very likley that it's a hybrid rather than the straight species...orchids are notoriously difficult to identify correctly
