  1. Westonbirt, The National Arboretum, is based in Gloucestershire and located three miles from the traditional Cotswolds market town of Tetbury.

[IMG]Westonbirt is an historic, Victorian picturesque landscape and an internationally important tree and shrub collection. It is managed by the Forestry Commission and supported by the Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum.
The 16,000 trees (2,500 different species) come from Britain, China, North America, Japan, Chile and other temperate climates.
[IMG]Within the 17 miles of accessible paths and five national collections, children become young adventurers, adults connect with trees through guided walks, workshops, self-led trails or volunteering.
Westonbirt attracts over 350,000 visits per year and is known worldwide for its spectacular autumn colour and the spring rhododendron, azalea and magnolia displays. The arboretum is popular for groups, individuals and educational visits.
[IMG]Popular events include the Live Music concerts programme, Treefest and the Enchanted Christmas illuminated trail.
Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum are also invited to talks, walks and special member events.
Westonbirt is committed to developing the arboretum for the future and has exciting plans that include a new Welcome Building and restoring the Grade I Listed Downs landscape. You can find out more on the Westonbirt Project section of the Friends' website.

I went to Westonbirt one Autumn a few years ago - we went to visit friends nearby, I knew of Westonbirt's fame, we saw a sign to it when we were nearing our destination, and I insisted that we all went the next day! Very glad I did, Acers looked amazing (but lots else too). Could not believe the number of cars there - huge HUGE parking areas, all very well managed, but I totted up on my fingers & thumbs how many people must have been visiting, and was really impressed./ Its a huge area, so the number of people wasn't a problem.

Highly recommended if you get the chance, as I did, or even if you have to make a special trip :)

Entrance is a tad pricey! Yes I know I can get in cheaper if I join the National Trust, but how much is that and does it make the entrance fee any less ? ? ? ?

    Cheers, Tony.

To join the National Trust you need to making several visits, by my calculation, to National Trust properties per annum for it to pay-back (or be philanthropic of course :) )

Personally, I don't visit enough National Trust properties in a year to make it worthwhile

Westonbirt website currently lists prices as £9 per adult for teh Autumn period, £8 for Summer and £5 for Winter

I would have thought that £8-£9 compares very favourably with other gardens that take more than 2 hours to stroll around. If you only want (or are physically able) to go for a shorter time it doesn't look so attractive, I agree.
