I have this in the back garden and dont really know what it is - a yucca ? a cordyline ?

It grows about 2 feet a year and is now up in the branches of a large sycamore. can I cut it back without killing it ?

Lower trunk is smooth (pic 2) while higher up it is rough like coconut matting (pic 3)

    Its Cordyline australis.

Personally I'd cut down the sycamore.:lollol:

Yes you can cut it back, but do it soon so that it has chance to make new growth before the winter.
