Is anybody else listening to 1984 on Radio 4? So creepy, listening to it after reading it years ago and having forgotten the details and only remembered the catch phrases. People in boats drowning in the Med. Orwell was a true visionary.

If you are an Audible subscriber you can get an excellent collection of all his works, beautifully read - and I think I got mine in a 2.99 sale! I found 1984 very effective and scary as an audio book. Newspeak seems particularly prescient as these days many of us are being told to say/believe things that aren't true, and it can be career ending if you don't comply.

And when they’ve finished with Orwell they’re going on to Kafka. And after that, the news. Remember, it’s all GOOD news. No moaning at the bar.

That brings to mind the song by the great satirist/songwriter/pianist/singer and mathematics professor Tom Lehrer that had those words in it. He is now 96 :old:. He has relinquished copyright on all his songs and put them into the public domain. :love30:

I listened to a lot of the Orwell/Kafka programmes and enjoyed the readings and the various discussions. Read Animal Farm as an O Level set book and first read 1984 about the same time.

I've still got all his LP's and remember when he got criticised for writing "The Old Dope Peddler" and "I hold Your Hand In Mine, Dear" when the critics couldn't see that they were satirical.

I’m afraid I pinched “no moaning at the bar” from Mr Lehrer.

He’s also on a video having a go at “That is the end of the News” as sung by Michael Law, above.
