I have treated myself to a new external Hard drive.
I`m sure like most of us we have loads of pictures and videos we do not want to lose.
I have over 10,000 pictures and hours of video.
    I went for a large 1TB drive, That 1000GB !
That now gives me 250GB internal, 250GB external and now the new 1TB external. I now feel more secure with all the memories I have locked up on one machine.
I probable should have reformatted the new drive to NTSC format, but it seems to be ok with some of the large files I have thrown at it.

Of course, you've now got the 'problem' of backing-up the 1TB external drive :D or are you keeping that in a Fireproof Safe somewhere?

I have just realised this thread should be about PC questions..
Sorry guys. slight senior moment there. :old:
I think what I am trying to say is for the good folk on this forum to consider backup storage for all the precious stuff they have on their PC
I lost loads a few years ago when I had a hard drive crash on me.
On that drive was a years worth of course work for the B Tech I was taking at the time.:mad:

I guess that not many people back-up their 'precious' data and, perhaps, unknowingly, take the risk.

My important stuff on the Computer doesn't change very rapidly so I back-up on a monthly basis on the grounds that I can either afford to lose a months worth of changes or can re-create the data in the event of a 'disaster'.

I do however, store the back-ups away from the House, (in my case the local Pub which is about a mile away, and they store theirs with me). So, if there is some sort of 'disaster' eg fire, I can get my data back and continue to run the business whilst Mrs Doogle does the cleaning up :D

Perhaps 'over the top' for most people but worth thinking about .

Not over the top at all.
Having suffered a loss it is no fun trying to recover from that position.
I do not have business info such as youself doogle but I can just imagine the anguish...
I used to back up a telemetry system where I used to work onto a DAT tape. It took hours to complete and believe me that DAT was a long way from the main frame for storage.

I have always and still do think 1TB of space is pointless.
Suppose you back everything up to that drive, that drive then gets damaged, you have lost the lot.
What is wrong with having several smaller drives, if one gets damaged you still have the others so you have not lost the lot.

I good point water garden and the truth is my pictures are stored on all three of my drives. The videos are stored on my two external drives. I think I have it all covered very nicely
anything else like my garden spreadsheet and other stuff I could probable live without if I had that major crash. But, now I have a 1tb theres room to backup a single copy of the minor stuff.
    I`m I making sense?

Just out of interest, with all my pictures and most of my videos now stored on the 1tb has used 108gb of 931gb available space.

Backing up is NOT over the TOP!! Losing data is something someone does only once!! Especially when people dont print out their digital photos any more.

To avoid losing any data use mirrored raid drives on your pc and backup first to an external hdd and finally to dvd`s.That gives you at least 3 copies of everything
Make sure you put the dvd backups out of the sun and preferably in an oxygen free container as they also degrade over time and lose data.

Suppose you want us to pump the air out next.

I would say backing up to cd / dvd a complete waste of time / effort.

Back up to a "memory stick" no need to worry about oxygen "degrading it"
You could even drop it and run it over it will be ok, can't do that to a cd / dvd
Also cd / dvd takes longer to do, and if you back up regularly its going to cost a small fortune in cd / dvd discs.Which, all in all makes cd / dvd back ups pointless.
