We are renovating and the garden was derelict for 20yrs. Any ideas what either plant is please? I don't mean the nettles and alkanet, but the taller plant in that pic and the other in the pot with tassels.

The ‘grassy’ one with the tassels is Carex pendula … a tenacious invasive PITA. I would get rid of it and keep my eyes open for seedlings popping up anywhere in your garden.

The statuesque one behind the alkanet is Euphorbia lathyris aka Caper spurge/mole spurge. They self-seed and pop up especially when neglected soil has been disturbed. They can be regarded as a nuisance but I quite like them. They’re nothing like as tenacious as the carex and can be removed by pulling up…. BUT wear long sleeves and gloves as the milky latex-like sap can burn if it gets on your skin and is exposed to bright sunlight. I know ‘cos I got some on my leg when I was a child and I remember the painful red weals … and definitely don’t let it get in your eyes. However the same is true of all euphorbias and it’s not stopped them being very popular garden plants.
