our garden is primarily for the three dogs we have. A GSD, a black Lab and a chocolate Lab.

Also An aviary with around 75 budgies including some crested varieties.

three guinea pigs too - which keep the lawns in check

I used to exhibit them but now only breed for pleasure.

Mainly keep Spangles due to the beautiful wing pattern. and mix this colour with yellowface and pied.
Also some nice Lutinos ( red eye yellows)
I purchased the crest last year and am yet to bred with these.

If you are interested in Cage & Aviary birds please check out www.ff3.co.uk the uk's largest online bird club. I am a member on that site too. they are updating the server this week so only a small temporary site is in use, but back to normal soon - hopefully

So the dogs currently using the grass as a racing circuit are fairly big..... SNAP!! Well, 2 of mine are, the other is a westie..... (2 different variations on lab/collie cross) - they all do the same with my grass.....

Do you have an outside aviary for the budgies, Shaun? A neighbour of mine in Herts had a shed he'd constructed specially for them.

I used to breed them in the 1970's.I used to have Albino's{white with red eyes} Lutino's,Australian Banded Pieds and Opalines. It was facinating picking the eggs up and holding them to a light bulb and seeing the growing embryo forming in the egg....
I used to mix codliver oil to the seed which helped the hens to lay the eggs and kept them in good condition...
I used to buy the Cage & Avairy bird newspaper each week.I even went down to one of the big Cage & Avairy Bird Sows that was held in London.

I remeber seeing a few crested varieties at one of the shows and I think there were different types of crests,if my memory is correct.I don't think I have ever seen a spangle.I remember though that there were a few Harlequin colours being bred.

If you want some deep coloured Lutino's I think you have to pair them with the right shade of green...I still have one of my avaries over at my father in laws garage, never been used for over 20 odd years...
I had some budgerigar books that I found up the loft but I think I chucked them away last year. One of the books gave a list of combinations of colours you could get from different pairings...

Do you think the babies look ugly in the nest box?but when they get their feathers they begin to look nice and it is good to see what colours they turn out...You have given me a trip down memory lane...Thanks

the spangle is a relativly new variety arriving in the Uk around 1980ish, the wing markings are reversed, ie feather which are usually black are now the body colour and the feathers which would normally be yellow or white on the wing are now black.

I have a large shed in the garden which has two large inside aviaries inside and 16 double breeding cages.
the chicks when newly hatched are totally naked and alien looking - about the size of a mans thumb nail! and grow rapidly until at six weeks are independant to their parents
