I think I probably planted my cucumber (and courgette) seeds too early. The indoor cucumbers I planted mid April and potted into 7" pots about a week ago are in flower in my conservatory. It feels too cold to put them in the greenhouse yet - if I put them into bigger pots (10"?) will they do OK in the conservatory for now? (And lets not even mention the 50 tomato seedlings; 20 peppers, 15 chillis and 10 courgette and numerous beans!)

    Thank you

    Kathy

    Yes!!

What's the problem with your greenhouse?

Even if a cold greenhouse its probably warm enough now ... if you can be bothered you could cart the plants back to the conservatory each night, and then put back in the greenhouse during the day, so that they get acclimatised to the greenhouse for 7 days or so - leave them there, after day three, if the forecast is for a mild night, and don't put them in the greenhouse at all if its going to be an overcast, dull, dismal day.

But having said that, my DW allows me to treat our conservatory as a grow-house from March to ... errrmmm ... about now!!!

The greenhouse is very very old (and in some places literally green despite scrubbing!) and there are some areas where the glass doesn't meet leaving draughty gaps. Plus it's full of strawberries. And more beans. But, that's a smashing idea to acclimatise them gradually, especially since I have enough that I can afford to lose a few. Thank you.

I sowed my courgettes (heark at me a newbie veg gardener) in the greenhouse three weeks ago, they have germinated and are doing well, they don't need potting on yet at about 6cms tall, and I have a rather poor excuse for a greenhouse too. It really is quite warm in there now, I don't see why they wouldn't be ok.

Cucumbers very susceptible to cold though, so if they get a check it will knock them back a lot. Courgettes less so, but I've seen them stand still when I've planted them out on 1st June and the weather, although not frosty, wasn't "warm".

I would prick-out your Courgettes if they are 6cm tall - I prick mine out when the seed leaves come up. But having said that you did say "pot on" so maybe you planted one-seed-per-pot (3" - 9cm say) already, in which case they'll probably be fine until planted out. I desperately need to pot mine on, they were sown on 1st April, and pricked out a week later into 3" pots, but really need 5" pots now so I can hold them another few weeks. Sowed mine far too early, one month before planting out date would be better, and I don't like to plant out before 1st June, so 1st May sowing date I think is about right for me for next year.
