I was cooking tea (dinner) earlier. I had some rice in the steamer in the microwave while some mediterrean chicken was cooking on the hob. Then suddenly, BANG! something actually exploded with enough force to hurl itself right across the kitchen, hitting the wall with anothe bang.

I think I need a new microwave. An immediate investigation revealed that a small button cell (watch battery) which had been on the work surface just in front of the microwave, had exploded. Literally blew itself apart.

So that was exciting, but it also reveals something slightly less fun. I guess I need a new microwave. I can only assume that microwave energy must have been leaking through the door at a sufficient level to microwave the button the cell til it exploded.

It is about 3 years old and was only about £25 from Tesco. I must admit that I'm a bit worried about how many times we might have obliviously irradiated ourselves but I think it has probably only recently started misbehaving.

You're right though it is dangerous. Quite apart from leaking energy, neither of us were actually in the kitchen when it went bang (I was just coming back in from the garden and wife, by coincidence was just coming in at the same moment to see what I was doing). If one of us had been in there, while I'm sure there wasn't enough force to actually injure us in most cases, a perfect eye shot would have done some damage.

Un-plug the microwave, and don't use it again; it must be leaking fairly substantially to cause a button cell to explode like that.

Whilst I can understand the attraction of cheap appliances, especially when money is as tight as it is nowadays, you really do get what you pay with electrical goods.

Do yourself a favour, buy a Panasonic microwave, and then sit and pat yourself on the back for the next 10-15 years that you have saved a fortune in the longer term.

I'm thinking we don't really need a microwave. Probably 90% of its usage is to work the rice steamer. This gets me to thinking, instead of buying another microwave, I might just buy an electric rice steamer instead. I've had a look and there are ones out there, but they seem to get very mixed reviews, and nobody seems to be saying how long they take to cook stuff.

                Anyone know anything about these?

Mrs Shiney uses a rice cooker (I prefer cooking rice on the hob) but mainly for a full meal with rice, veg, herbs and spices all mixed together. It's certainly convenient for doing that and only takes about 20 minutes for the full meal. She can prep everything hours beforehand and leave it in the cooker. Then just switch it on when she's ready to cook the meal.

She entertains friends very often for lunch and finds it brilliant to be able to prepare everything in the morning and just switch it on when they're ready to eat. The machine is very lightweight and sits on top of the bread maker - except when we're making bread.

Panasonic started out in life making rice cookers............. think they still make them, but not sure if they are available in this country though.

Only a silver star, to get a gold star it has to have come from Lakeland and have the original receipt with it so you can be 'not satisfied' with it and take it back for a full refund of the original purchase price under their no quibble guarantee scheme.

We bought this in Hong Kong on 25/10/1985 and have used it reasonably regularly since then.
Utterly reliable and cooks rice to perfection

it cooks rice for 8 - 10 persons so we also have a small one that cooks for 2, 4 or 6 persons.
