I'm about to make a raised bed for veg-growing, and am gardening on a slight slope (prob no more than 1 in 20?). Do I need to make the surface of the bed level, or can I make it to the same gradient as the ground (ie not setting it in, into the slope)?

I think I would try and keep the surface of the completed raised bed level, if it is more than a few degrees. I think the rain might wash your soil over the lower edge of the bed.

    Cheers, Tony.

 I was afraid that might be the case. Better get a-digging!

Yes, I agree. Try to get it level.

(oops - just realised I've probably put this in the wrong section, even though beds are to grow vegs. Sorry!)

I was a little surprised when I "leveled" the boards, to see how un-even the ground was!

A view of the bed from the drive. The far left corner is as it should be. Digging in needs to be done with the right-hand long plank, and the front beam (an old oak beam from the house, I suspect) needs to be set in all along its length.

Here you can see the amount of slope. Left-hand corner is at the height it will eventually be, short right beam to be set in. Long far plank to be set in a little. We have lots of scrap wood to fill in below, and I will line the inside with old rubber sheeting / tough plastic, to prevent too much soil leakage.
