Hi all, I am thinking of having a wooden arch placed as an a entrance to my small patio area. Just some wooden 4x4 posts possibly with some trellis added. I wanted to build 2 small brick square containers to plant a couple of climbing roses in to climb the arch. Just to make it a bit more decorative than planting straight into the ground.
My question is regarding the inside of the brick containers. I'm assuming soil isn't just put straight into the containers next to the brick? Is the inside that makes contact with the soil lined with something?

Hi Gazania, If you want healthy roses, I'd suggest that you just build the shells of the containers, but leave the bottoms open so the roses can grow into some deep soil. They're deep-rooted plants and would probably not do very well if contained in small boxes. As for lining, you could seal the brick with diluted Unibond, or line the boxes with plastic sheet before filling with soil. Either way, you'll need to prepare the soil really well, preferably with well-rotted FYM, as once they're planted, there won't be much space for top-dressing:)

Hi and thanks. Yes I will keep the bottom of the containers open to the ground. Sealing with diluted unibond sounds a good idea. I will combine it with a plastic sheet lining. When I get on with it I will post some pics.
      thanks again.

Hi, this is only the second year I have had roses. I thought I would try some roses last year and bought some David Austin roses and I have not been disappointed. The blooms have been fantastic and this week they have put on lots and lots of flowers again after blooming for months.
I don't know that much about roses so I would have to research climbers and ramblers before I bought any. I would really like fragrance like I have with these roses. Perhaps repeat flowering. And perhaps a yellow colour would look nice?

I have Teasing Georgia climbing up an obelisk with a Clematis - although the fragrance isn't nearly as strong as some of my other DA roses.

Also bought Golden Celebration this year which is stunning and very fragrant and the flowers are a lovely buttery yellow:wub2:

(Pics shown are of my Roses). Both are repeat flowering and have given me a profusion of beautiful blooms.
