    What are these please?

    The pointed leaf one in the foreground, with the second picture a (poor) attempt at showing more of the plant.

    And this fellow that has spent too much time hiding behind a lavatera - possibly a hibiscus?

    Is the first a Dahlia?
    The second one could be a Hibiscus or being as leggy as it is maybe Abutilon megapoticum.

        The second one looks to be a Hibiscus syriacus.
        Aint got a clue on No1.

          Ah, I never even considered a dahlia, but yes it could very easily be a dahlia as I had tons of them in that border; I did think I had lifted all of the tubers, but it is quite likely that I didn't.

          I suppose it could be one of the Bishop's Children ones. @pete appears to be bang one with the hibiscus - I did remember buying one, I bought a peonie at the same time, and I planted them both and promptly lost sight of them.

          The hibiscus is clearly in the wrong place I think - is it too late to move it this year now? What is the best course of action to bring it up to scratch?

          I will keep tabs on the possible dahlia and see what it does - never had either of the abutilon or an astilbe in the garden (not that I would complain if they had arrived by themselves)

          I think you have Astilbe and Hibiscus FC. :)

          I'd leave the Hibiscus where it is until it's dormant later in the year but you could prune it meantime. I'd take all the stems back to the level of the large cluster of leaves on the right side and take out any deadwood.

          Do astilbe self seed then? I definitely haven't bought any (although nearly did this year as I like them)

            I know very little about Astilbe's but having googled it - it seems they do self seed but don't germinate readily.

            You can try but I don't want to disappoint you, wishes don't always come true. :doh::)
