Milk and water spray works for me here. :) Organic & doesn't harm the bees.

Keeping the soil moist and adding plenty of humus will effectively keep mildew at bay :)

Hi TrevorB, LOL i just posted today on my Blog about Powdery Mildew never had a problem before -but I've had a horrible time with it this year  I'm told due to warm wet days and rather unseasonably cold evenings
      Lupins- Gladioli- Mon Amour - Anemone-De Caan.jpg
Really thought i was going to lose these plants - but thanks to the info in the links- as you can see they were saved.

I used this mix on these Lupin Minarette plants, that were covered in downy mildew so much so i was thinking i would have to burn these homegrown from seed plants [IMG] I used the lowest recommended mix i must admit i was rather sceptical [IMG] - I only applied it over three days morning and noon also making sure the Pot wasn't in full Sun and ker-ching the powdery mildew was gone- i couldn't believe how well it worked and more importantly no harm to any Wildlife [IMG]
So gets a BIG thumbs up from me :dbgrtmb:

The objective is to prevent mildew ....if plants are growing in unsuitable conditions and mildew prone plants are grown in dry soils mildew will occur.
I can now grow asters, scabious and other mildew martyrs by moving them to enriched soil areas.

I am plagued by powdery mildew here at the community garden, especially when growing cucurbits.

To minimise it, my favoured approach is to plant the cucurbit amongst a ground covering plant which regulates the humidity by reducing evaporation from the soil.

The cucurbit is trained to grow vertically up a pole or string. In a raised bed, this works really well using potato or callaloo as the ground cover but you must ensure that the cucurbit does not get shaded out before it can really take off.

Of course, this planting strategy is not always possible and it is those times that I am plagued by powdery mildew.

When that happens, I use a homemade fungicide similar to what BeeHappy suggested above.

However, I use potassium bicarbonate as the active ingredient instead of sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda, aka bicarbonate of soda). The latter works perfectly well for occasional use but for repeated use, say, for 5+ plus applications, it becomes toxic to the plant.

Potassium bicarbonate does not have this detrimental effect.
