Why oh why has my faithful billion blooms every spring suddenly shed 80% of it's leaves and the rest are brown and brittle and it looks literally on it's last legs, i have done nothing to it, it had a big haircut last year and bloomed brilliantly this spring but now...
    Any thoughts?

Can only say that I dont think they are long lived shrubs as a rule.
I have a dead one in my garden.

My 20ft high ceanothus tree has given up the ghost this year. As pete says, they are not usually very long-lived and most varieties only last about 10 years.
