My first years experience of gardening is proving to be an absolute joy (if not a constant nagging worry ) with enormous thanks to all those who are happy to answer my endless questions!

    I'm afraid I have more...

    1. My daylily finished flowering about two weeks ago, can I lift and divide now? If I do should I cut back the leaves? I'm worried it will look awful against the flowering plants in the bed if I do.

    2. Should I cut back the dead flower heads on my pieris?

    3. If I use Roundup on some new shoots of ground elder that are poking through the soil, how long do I have to leave the area before I can plant there?

    Thank you in advancek-l

The leaves of the daylily go a very bright orangey yellow towards the end of the season. I personally like this. They need to stay on to continue to provide sustenance for the roots. You can divide them at the end of the season.

You can cut the flower heads off your pieris, but you don't really have to.

And the round up question-I think after two weeks it is safe to plant up in that area-but this is one you'd have to wait for someone who actually uses herbicides to answer.

The worry will go away and you will be left with -it has two choices- lol.

Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Round Up, becomes inert very quickly once it comes into contact with the soil, so the soil will be safe within a few days tops. However, the plant that you sprayed needs time to absorb the glyphosate before you dig it up or otherwise damage it. That can take a couple of weeks or so demanding on how tough the weed is.

With Glyphosate you can plant as soon as the solution has dried on the weeds.:thumb:
