3 & 4 are deffo weeds. Some sort of spurge and a willowherby thing. Both quite easy to pull up which is all I ask of a weed.

1 Looks like one of the tribe of leathery evergreens - could be a laurel?

    2. Possibly a baby horse chestnut. Rather a handsome looking plant, I think.

    6. Probably a herb robert - another weed but also easy to pull up but rather pretty and aromatic so i often don't pull them up. If you were really lucky it might be a geranium palmatum or even a type of clematis, hard to tell sometimes without seeing the whole plant - so don't pull it up till you're sure.

thanks Madahhlia. Horse Chestnut! I knew the leaf shape reminded me of something but I couldn't think what. It could well be, it is down near the bottom of the garden so it can stay there, if it wants to become a tree it is welcome to down there.

1 could be a laurel, it was a bush last year but it was caught up with a holly bush and barberry bush when we moved in so I ended up chopping all 3 down because they were completely overgrown, beyond being tidily shaped etc and it looks like it is growing back quite nicely. (not as well as the rose bush I tried to kill off because I was worried about the children with thorns - that has produced 18 beautiful roses already)

I thought 3, 4 and 5 were probably weeds but 3 is actually quite pretty and is growing in amongst the wood sorrell down at the bottom of teh garden which I am trying to make into a bit of a wild flower area so I will leave those down there (it is filling in the gaps nicely at the moment and is in sort of raised rock garden beds)

6 is growing all over where there was a sort of sunken rockery when we moved in. I have planted lavender along there as well as clematis, honeysuckle and fuschias plus a lot of campanula grows along there so it can stay then. saves on the weeding!

      thanks for your help

Number 5 looks like a wallflower to me.
Agree with Madahhlia on all the others.
A word of caution regarding the Spurge: these will seed quite freely and you may find yourself pulling hundreds of these out of that patch of ground next year.
Also, I've just looked it up in my trusty old 'Wildflowers of the Wayside and Woodland' book and I quote; 'All the species have milky sap and are poisonous'.

Don't think 6 is herb Robert, with which I am all too familiar. Herb Robert in my garden would cover everything if allowed. Fortunately it's easy to pull out. The leaves don't look quite the same but it could be a relative!

I've pulled out millions and am still alive. Still, if you've got a baby who is almost certain to be scoffing cartloads of the stuff every day, best be on the safe side, eh?

Even cabbage is poisonous if you eat enough of it. Apparently.

              n. 3 can be a weed as much as you like, but it is a pretty one.

                thanks everyone

I have a very vague recollection of number 1 having bright red berries? I know I was a bit anti berry bushes when we moved in because of the girls but there were 3 bushes caught up together so it might not have been that one with the red berries.

the girls don't eat plants luckily (they are now 2 and 3) so as long as it isn't poisonous to touch/be near/if you pick it up (they like picking leaves) then we should be ok but I do think for a weed number 3 is pretty.

remind me not to tell my children too much cabbage is poisonous, that will give them a perfect reason not to eat it!
