    Lovely.

Why do Hellebores insist on growing with their flowers facing downwards?

There are some expensive new hybrids which have upward facing flowers.

    Great helebores Palustris.
In my last garden I had winter flowering helebores (don't know the variety now but I grew them from seed.) They were greeny/yellow. They started flowering in November and flowered all the way through to May. They self seeded all over the place and I could lift as many as I wanted out of the gravel path.
I brought some here to my new home with me. The plants have survived - but not thrived - and no flowers to be seen in 2 years.
The winters have been colder and drier than I had before. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.
I would love to have my helebores back if anyone has any ideas. Palustrus ?

    Hi Palustris,

We have some upward facing ones. I'll take a photo if the sun comes out before they finish. If they manage to seed would you like one? :thumb:

Oooh, yes please. I can swap you some seed of H. ballardii if you would like. (That is the yellow one in the pictures).
Alice. They would either have been H. foetidus which is native or H. lividus. Both of these flower over Winter, but they do like an edge of woodland type environment. You may have too dry an atmosphere for them.

Thank you Palustrus. Now I remember they are H. Foetidus and I think you've cracked the problem.
They had ideal conditions before but now my garden is more open and much drier.
I'll see what I can do for them.
