When sowing Beetroot, sprinkle some salt in the bottom of the drill first, this gives the beetroot a better flavour and colour.

Nope, it`s a fact. I used to do it when I had an allotment years ago. It definitely works. I should also point out I hate Beetroot. I used to grow it for my wife.:dbgrtmb:

I love beetroot .. but not pickled ... but as I can't grow it here (lack of space, etc, etc) I buy it in the shrink-wrapped packs as I did today (please don't cringe everyone) as opposed to the fresh I have to boil in the heat here . I love it with salads but hubby hates it ... :heehee:

It's the only vegetable that I detest, loathe, hate, and you've guessed it, Victoria, dislike:( I blame the school dinners that I used to suffer when I was a kid, just the thought of beetroot make me want to :mute::D

Because people who DO like Beetroot have said so. simples. rmandii I too had a bad experiance with boiled, diced and disgusting Beetroot at school dinners. Usually served with tepid mash and grey " meat ". Or should it be with grey mash and tepid meat? There is a simple test for anyone who doesn``t believe me. Try it.:dbgrtmb:

same as celery .... in south africa, they sell celery stalks with the leaves

the leaves are excellent (and essential) when making a homemade lamb /vegetable soup ... it's an essential part of the soup

go to the market, ask for celery with the leaves and everyone thinks you are mad? .... don't even bother at the big supermarkets as all the leaves have been removed
