A friend has given me this powder. It is diluted in water and then chucked into a pond to clear the algae. He says it is very good - but can't remember what it is called.

If it works - then I'll be looking to purchase some more as he told me that it has to be reapplied to keep the green water away.

Has anyone used this before - if so - what is it called?

I dont know, why dont you ask him?
Does you pond have green water now? I always find it more of a spring problem which goes away once the vegetation starts growing.

Its not an algaecide is it? If it is I wouldn't use it.

It's a bit of a story. I was talking to his daughter and we were discussing ponds. She said she uses this - but couldn't remember what it is called.

The next day - a clear plastic bag containing a white powder  turns up at my Mum's. Mum will ask tomorrow - but I thought that I'd throw it out on this 'ere forum in case someone recognises it.

If I find out what it is - I'll put it on here - as it is apparently very effective at clearing pond water.

Yep, the pond is green all the time - it's in the ideal position to promote algae - but then I can't move it. My garden is smaller than a postage stamp.

Looks like Isinglass finings. You use it in winemaking to clear the wine. I think it comes from a fish swim bladder.

Mum has asked what the mystery powder is - he doesn't know - as he was given it by his other daughter.

The mystery substance will just have to remain just that....

I’ve used ‘Blanket Answer’ and it looks very much like that. Very effective. Obviously, you wouldn’t want to put anything in the pond if you don’t know what it is.
