    Hear hear!!!

I have four guinea pigs - two of them adopted - they had been rescued from hideous circumstances. They are the making of my mini-herd, I love them to bits!

I haven't yet watched the video, but i did just want to say something.

I run the Redwall Rattery, I both breed and rescue fancy rats, so i can say something from both sides on this. I have been breeding for 2 years and rescueing for 11 years. I work in rehabilitation of strays and abused and neglected rats. It is tough and emotional work, for instance take these 2 girls.

This is Holly and Comet. Both petshop rats. Their previous owners had them in a good cage, but on **** bedding, no toys, unsuitable food and were never handled or received vet care.

Holly has a lump, it was left so long it is now inoperable. So she will have to be put down before her time when it becomes painful for her. This lump was caused by neglectful breeding by the petshop industry.

I breed completely differently. I breed these guys.

These are specialist varieties admittedly, but at the same time, i am breeding foremostly for temperment and health. The rats i breed are very carefully monitored, i keep contact wiht every single owner i adopt out to to check on progress and health maintenance, and my lines are now established enough that 75% live for much longer than petshop bred rats, and are also over twice the size of pet shop rats. They are also naturally inquisitive, human responsive and much more resiliant to most common rat illnesses.

If breeders like me can better the lines of pet rats, we can overall improve the species, before it mutates into some shrivelled up biting toothy rodent that lives just over a few months, and also, the more people that adopt from eithe r rescues OR bred fancy rats from reputable breeders like me [not 'backyard breeders', people trying to make money out of whacking a girl and boy together and seeing what happens through the freeads] the less rats that will be bred by the pet shop industry because the demand will be that much lower.

    Okay, i'm done. :D

Whiley, keep your wig on no one is mentioning anything about rats.If you watched the video you would see that it is about dogs and cats that are in rehoming centres up and down the country :(

I am sure you are doing a grand job in rescuing rats that people have bought and no longer want, all the pets I have and have ever owned are ones that people have bought for their kids, but once the novelty has worn off, then they are not wanted any more.

There is a website that I peruse called Many Tears Rescue and you should see the photos of the poor dogs on there which have been used for breeding because they are Pedigree and these type of dogs are the must have thing when wanting a dog,but as soon as their time has finished they are sent to the local dog pound and if not taken then Many Tears takes them on and tries to rehome them, though for many of them it is probably too late because they have spent all their adult lives as breeding machines.

It isn't just this country that has appalling cruelty cases,a lot of the European countries have far worse animal problems than we have because the wages for the workers are so low that they can't even afford the vets bills so think of the conditions those pets live in  :(

And now I am done :D

Oh blimey my wig wasn't going anywhere :D I think i must have come across wrong!

It was more in response to that quote that Jarbax used, 'Don't breed and buy while rescue pets die'!

My statement about the work i do was simply explaining that rescueing pets is all very well and i support it to the point of giving up all income, space and time to them [IMG] But we need to work to responsibly to keep the species healthy also, not just clean up the mess after irresponsible people breed them.

Sorry if i came across badly folks!

I think i was just riding my high horse after having to make the decision over my darling Triss being put to sleep, thats all.

Whiley, I don't think you came across wrong at all. We have Welsh Terriers, but if I was going to write a piece about what we do, it probably would come out almost word for word what you have written. We only let our bitches have puppies when there are genuine people waiting to have them and then the dog and bitch have to be matched for temperement, good health prospects and type. WT's are a numerically small breed and we have no qualms about producing the pups to keep the breed standards high, no new pups, breed dies out.
We also, like yourself, operate as a rescue and rehoming facility. With the best will and preparation in the world, we can all make mistakes and we would never knowingly let a WT go to a Vets on a one way ticket because it was incorrectly homed. So keep up the good work and good luck to you.
