Hi guys, I have a brick wall by my back door and the area never get any sunshine (or very very little) Is there a plant that would be quite slim, grow to perhaps six feet and live in a pot quite happily. The area needs a bit of green to cheer it up. An evergreen would be good. Any ideas would be most appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Not the most exciting plant, I know, but if you're dealing with a rather dank area which gets no sunshine, you could always go for an ivy. I've never grown one in a pot but on the whole ivy seems to virtually indestructible, so it would probably be ok. The variegated forms such as 'Goldheart' are a lot less dreary than the plain greens. I like ivy for its self-clinging properties, although some people worry about what its aerial roots do to their masonry.

A climbing hydrangea (H. anomala/altissima) might also cope - but I doubt it would enjoy life in a pot. I must admit, however, that I've never put this to the test!

Ignore that last name. Looking at wrong line in book. The climbing hydrangea is H. petiolaris. Left unchecked it can grow to 60 feet - a little over your limit!

    3 possibilities:

Rhododendron, Camellia or Mexican Orange Blossom. All should do well there.

I'd also go with the ivy - grow in a pot and up an obelisk to get the height
