A PLUM POPPY!!!

I've got a small collection of Oriental Poppies of around 11, some named and some not. But this Poppy has got to be my favourite............"Paty's Plum":





This variety flowers later than most of the rest, although all the unnamed Poppies haven't flowered as yet although they're in bud.

 

Oh Yes, Jenny, the Oriental Poppy plant gets to around 4' tall and 3' wide, while the flowers can be around 6" wide.....which makes them even more spectacular!!

 

Well, I go the quick way of propagating them, Joolz, by dividing them, even a portion of root left in the soil will root. They produce massive seed heads and will self seed if you want them to.

I like the frilly version of Paty's Plum, Pal, although the colour doesn't seem to be the same.........more pink than the single version??

 

Hi Tiarella, good to hear from you. I hope you will forgive me for disagreeing with you regarding Oriental Poppies being short lived as a plant, some of the unnamed Oriental Poppies I have are around 20 to 25 years old, same with my Paeonies.

But if you're talking about the duration of the flowers then I do agree with you However, I try to get around it to some extent by getting different varieties which will flower at different times. Some years it works and some years.............!!! However, like the Paeonies, despite the brief flowering period I wait for the Poppies to flower with great excitement and anticipation every year.

 

I,'ve never had trouble with bees damaging the petals, Joolz, although they do like Poppies They seem to thrive in deep and light shade as well as in the sunlight, so they're quite an adaptable plant.

I think it's also called Papaver somniferum "BLACK BEAUTY", Jenny, or if not they're very similar. It's a very deep red and looks like a fantastic poppy to come across!! I'm a sucker for Poppies and like them all
