    Hello All

I thought I'd better give a little introduction before I start bombarding you all with my newbie questions!

Currently living in East Yorkshire with wife and 5 week old son, moved into to a house last August with a garden so gonna give a veg patch a go plus sorting out everything else in the garden!

I've liked gardening since I can remember and I've now got chance to put it to some use

      Hi nFrost and welcome,
Looks like some work to be done, a word of caution though. If it was an established garden, there may be some bulbs, plants that will come up in spring, keep a look out for any worth saving, get your ideas firmly in place and a nice plan on paper.
You have a blank canvas, it`s easier to get it right first time than wish you had not done something in haste.

Looks like it`s wildlife friendly already...

Thanks for the welcome, I've dug up a lot of bulbs already and have been transplanting them throughtout the rest of the garden. Around 150 so far.

There was a quite a few at the back which is to become my veg patch. Hopefully it wont affect the veg???

It is definately wild life friendly, the gardens behind my all connect together with a large wild bit connected on to that. Just trying to lure them in them in now!

You appear to have an area paved, site for, greenhouse, shed. Thats useful, there are 2 very large trees, do they cast shade, also that looks a nice firm path I see at the end a round area with a solar light, is it a garden bed,or filled in fish pond ?.
The area at the back looks a very good veg site.
Your wildlife appear to be in already, the wild area you mention is a great source.

The paved area will most likely become the BBQ area as there is a concrete shed type thing right next to it so it doesn't get a great amound of sun.

The two large trees do cast large shadows at this time of year but during summer it's not too bad, I'm hoping to borrow my Dad's hedge trimmer and do my side of the trees. Unfortunately my next door neighbour is a bit of a miserable old bat and has decided she doesn't like us (wont even say hello of a morning!).

The round area has a bird bath on it but you can't see it too well in the pic, the birds love dropping bread in it!

I'm hoping the veg patch is in a good site, its approximately 3m x 5m. I've been mounting a major assault on the ivy at the back, trimmed it down from a 5foot barrier and cut it out of the two elderberry trees at the back. This should let a lot more light in. I will not be defeated.

I'll post some more pics tonight, I can't do it from my work computer.

Warning:- the two trees look like Leylandii. If they are (or one of a number of other types of conifer) then you need to ne careful about cutting much opff your side. If you cut back into brown growth it will never regrow! Most conifers only regrow from green growth.

The two tree's haven't got a main trunk so to speak, lots of smaller ones. I'd be most glad to cut them down to the ground and shred them to be honest, but that's not gonna happen!

I've had the garden since August and really REALLY wish I'd taken pictures then. Such a difference already, but still a long way to go. I've got the side of the house and front still to do.

A closer view of the tree would help. One of the outside of it (and a close up of the greenery) and one of the trunks (maybe someone holding the branches open so we can get a view).

They could still be Leylandii but it sounds as though it's unlikely.

We should then be able to tell you how far you should go with it.

Even if it's Leylandii you would still be able to reduce the height as much as you want and cut your side back as long as you don't cut past the green part.

You should be able to reduce the height down to 2 metres

I'll get some more pics tonight, looks like a leylandii after looking on google. I'm starting to feel more confident about sorting it out now, bring it on.

          And thank you Mum!
