Mr. Ralph Moore passed away today at the age of 102. His contributions to hybridizing roses were monumental. He was a truly great rosarian and will be missed dearly.

As someone on another forum put it so eloquently:
"Heaven has a new gardener - their gain, our profound loss."

    Father of the Modern Rose

Mr Moore developed over 500 different types of Rose and has a worldwide following - he is particularly popular here in Britain, according to Ann Bird, president of the UK's Royal National Rose Society.

"He's an eminent world rosarian," Ms Bird, who flew in especially for the event, told the Fresno Bee.

"He's known for his miniature Roses. In the UK we all know him very well," she continued.

Ms Bird presented the centagenarian with a proclamation signed by the Queen, as well as 'the Queen Mother's International Rose Award'. Mr Moore, who was described as someone for whom "a million friends wouldn't be too many, but one enemy would be too much", has already been given the society's prestigious Dean Hole award.
