I have 2 skimmia fragrans in my garden which give all year round greenery, and in the spring fantastic scented flowers. Fragrans-fragrant cloud.
Well, during a windy night the washing line pole blew down and landed on one of the plants. It snapped off a whole branch which upset me as they are still quite young. Anyway, I decided to take every small shoot from the branch and put them each in a small pot with compost. 10 pieces in all. All through the rest of spring and this summer they have kept their colour. And now in the last couple of weeks roots have popped out of the bottom of the pots and I now have 10 young healthy plants that will spend the winter in the cold greenhouse and will gradually be put outside next year. A unexpected success!
I am also holding my breath for a small magnolia stem that also snapped off at the beginning of the year. It too has held it's colour but no sign of roots. That would put a smile on my face if that rooted :)

Well done! That's my sort of attitude to things going wrong - finding out how to benefit from the mishap :-)

Hi again, just been reading a book which states that this skimmia, maybe all skimmia's?, are easy peasy to root from cuttings in spring.

I have 15 successfully potted on now so that has given me some confidence to try other plants for cuttings. I've had success with hydrangeas in the past. Still hoping with my magnolia though.
