First the handbag, then the car and now the wallet! You'd think I would have learned by now. I wouldn't mind, but since the handbag-snatched-out-of-the-car episode and what the Victims Support guy told me, I have had a key ring with 24" chain on my handbag (with the key to my crooklock on it actually) but I have also always used it to chain my handbag to supermarket trolleys as well. I've always felt supremely smug about it - imagining someone trying to snatch it and finding it was tethered. Yeah, man - you just try it! [IMG]

Plus which I have lost count of the number of women I have stopped and advised when they walk away to look at the shelves and leave their handbag sitting in the trolley.

Oh, pride goeth before a fall!

Well, I have felt smug once too often. I had a nice day and was feeling relaxed and good about the world and life for once. I stopped off to do a wee shop in Asda. I chained the bag as per and went in, quite missing the simple fact the the zipped compartment containing my wallet/purse was not only undone but the wallet was sitting there smiling up at people and practically shouting out "Nick me! Nick me!"

    So someone did!

I got to the checkout and loaded my stuff onto the belt, reached for my purse - and there it was - gone!

I just hope the bit of money that was in there helped the person who was in such need they felt tempted to steal. Yeah, I know that's kinda shmaltzy but it's how I am. Not like it contained my week's wages or anything and so I had the inconvenience of ringing round to cancel various bits of plastic but so what?

Just another lesson learned. Geez - how many more!

It happens so often I'm afraid. When we had our new kitchen fitted we had a carrier containing about £200 worth of small collectables stolen by one of the workmen. Problem is - joiners, plasterers, plumbers, electricians, painters, about 30 in all. So who? We have a very good idea but it's circumstantial so.....

We both feel sorry for you and know how you must feel.

Tesco..three weeks ago. Man runs out of store clasping a purse being chased by a rather too large securtity person..."Stop that thief" he shouted. Four young men hearing the commotion, turned to look and realising what was going on, caught the man. The guard caught up and radioed the Police. All was calm until a distressed senior lady walked up to claim her purse. The young men were non too pleased that the man had targeted a lady so mature in years and proceeded to punish him with, what I can only describe as, beautifully administered blows:thumb:.
When the Police came to arrest him only the guard was him....the four Polish lads were in the store being treated to coffee and sticky buns:D.

Thanks all! Paladin - I LOVE that tale!

I went back to Asda today to pay my grocery bill and spoke with the security man. He has already spotted two known thieves who came in
to the store minutes after I did, were in approximately the same areas as me and left very soon after without having purchased anything! He told me that all the stores in Sunderland collaborate to maintain information on such individuals that are well known to them. Seems their movements can often be traced all over the town on their various cctvs as stores tell each other they are working! And, of course, the stores' security staff work closely with the police.

So, as with the handbag, there seems a very good chance that
by connecting various other similar thefts, they may be able to get them sent down for it.

I was very impressed and made it my business to phone the store manager when I got home to express my appreciation of his staff's performance.

A bit of good news in your story then daisees, I'm sorry to hear about what happened. Don't remember reading about the bag, car etc.

Sarra, *********. How can they do things like that.

Pal, glad to hear your story. Should happen more often.

    Leaves me speechless.

    cheers

Daisees, sorry to hear what happened.

In most towns the big stores (and some small ones) collaborate in an 'Early Warning System'. Each store has a group of others to contact and the word gets around quite quickly. It has helped in catching and prosecuting quite a lot of criminals.

The police also get involved in the system and one Saturday afternoon when I was in work four youths (about 20 years old) came in quite a bit worse for drink. About two minutes after they entered I got a phone call from the police asking if I thought I might need some help :thumb: and that they had a constable close by. I thanked them for their concern but was able to keep the situation under control. The lads turned out to be quite cheerful and were celebrating that their football team had just won. :)

:mad: Oh Daisees how horrid for you... Still maybe the thief will be caught after all.... Can but hope...;) It is a very big problem I know, in nearly all the shops around this area they have large notices inside & on the doors as you enter... Saying...

Most of the shop keepers have placed them near the door handles in the hope they will be read..!!!

:o Slightly different but, we had a circular from our community bobby today, to say there are bogus door to door sellers going around in our area & there have been a couple of thefts.... One keeps you busy, the other slips in your house & helps himself...!!!! Will they catch them..???? Don't hold allot of hope but you never know..!

:thumb: Good on your young chaps too Pal... Sorry, but to me, these people are some of the lowest of the low...!
