OK. It's there now. I can never remember plants' names though even when they are familiar. Pete or Peter or LoL or Walnut or Dai or Terrier etc. will know.

Thanks roders, I wonder what kind it'll turn out to be... I have found a couple more lurking in the borders while I was exploring today - be nice to have something flowering soon [IMG]

Jes, as Roders says, it is a Hellebore, common names are Christmas Rose and Lenten Rose.

I am not so sure it is either a Christmas Rose or a Lenten Rose. It looks to me as though the leaves are coming off a stem rather than ground level. Are you able to get a photo that is closer to the plant?

Looks more like Helleborus foetidus than either H. orientalis or H. niger. Easy enough to tell. If the leaves stink then first, if the flowers are coming from the leaf stems then last and if the flowers are on seperate stalks coming from ground level then H. orientalis!

Thanks for that, Palustris, I shall go out and check my hellebores to see which ones I have (I think they are H. niger, but they could be H. orientallis - hence the check).

It's Helleborus argutifolius, (Syn. Helleborus lividus corsicus)- the Corsican Hellebore.
