Just want to pick brains- is early summer the only best time to take cuttings?

As my plant is dormant at he moment, I suppose it's not a good time to do it now?

I have heard of cuttings, but I think the most common form of propagation is grafting.
Not tried either, hopefully someone will come up with some worth while info.

Airlayering is a good way to take larger cuttings on any broadleaf deciduous tree. Can be done with material pencil thick and upward.
My experience of taking softwood cuttings of Acer Palmatum 'deshojo' is not a good one, 100% failure :cry3: whereas with Elm I have had 75% success.
Early summer is your best bet for soft wood cuttings, good luck with them :) . I have known people have success with softwood cuttings of Acer P, by applying warmth to the roots.

Thanks for that info Whis4ey - I have had no success with cuttings - but will definitey try the seed route. I have the start of flowers on one of mine at the moment - will keep an eye on them.
