acer seeds 151212.JPG I have sown some Acer seeds today in my new heated propagator. I have followed the instructions, left in some peat in a zipper bag for 4-6 weeks then into the fridge for 90 days.

Not sure if anyone else has had success growing these but thought I would give them a go! Any ideas how long they should take to germinate? Wish me luck!

I've had mixed results with stratifying seeds in this way. Of course I had no way of knowing how viable the seed was, so it may not have been entirely down to me.

When I started out with the first seeds I was stratifying I asked for advice (probably on here :) ) and I seem to remember one suggestion was along the lines of "I just put my seeds in a pot and leave it outside for the Winter". With the benefit of hindsight I think that may have been at least as likely to have succeeded as faffing around with plastic bags and fridges! Although the one thing in the Baggie method's favour is the large number that can be accommodated in a small space, and the ease/seed with which lots of them can be checked for signs of germination etc. Plus you don't get any wind-blown seed also germinating in your pot, unlike one "just left outside for the Winter"

But I certainly wish you good luck :) Let us know how it goes?

P.S. I have two propagators exactly like yours. I think they are brill :)

I too tend to sow perennials, shrubs and trees that need stratifying straight in to pots or trays and then put them in a sheltered spot outside (usually with a piece of chicken mesh over them to keep birds & squirrels out). I then either leave them too it or move them in to a greenhouse or coldframe to give them a bit of heat to get them going in the spring.

I wish you luck in your seed sowing, its incredibly good fun and very satisfying when you grow your own stuff from 'scratch' especially perennials, trees and shrubs (for me anyway:)) :dbgrtmb:

    Thanks for replies so far!

Definitely gives a sense of achievement growing from seed, only grown annuals so far which have been relatively straightforward.

Any ideas how long these should take to germinate?

Thanks, I thought it would be difficult. I did have some acer's in pots and occasionally a seed or two would root in the soil around the pots.
I have a few kojo no mai in pots which are really nice. A nice tree shape, lots of leaves, lots of blossom, then lots of seeds which find themselves sprouting all around the garden.
Are you going to try again?
