I was given this as a gift a few weeks back. I put it in a large pot and it is with my other potted acers in a sheltered spot with only late afternoon sun. The leaves have suddenly started to drop off. It's nearly bald. No discolouration. Just leaf drop. Why:(

Now you are going to tell me the pot was too big aren't you? It was in a thirty something pot and i put it in a forty something pot. It has all it's wee new buds and is not dead. The leaves just all dropped. Not a gradual process just whoof.

These trees have a second set of buds for just such a calamity. It may well be fine :)
An experienced little girl like yourself might well be able to work out for yourself what could have happened?
Root disturbance? bad drainage? wind? rain? too wet? too dry? sometimes I am left to ponder myself :)
I had a tree in a pot which did well for many years and suddenly started to lose its leaves this year. I removed it from the pot and stuck it into a large tub of my home made leafmould as a temporary measure, and moved it into almost total shade and well sheltered. The second set of leaves have all developed beautifully and the plant will recover :)

    0) Whis4y. It had been doing very nicely where it was. I've have had it since the end of May and re potted when I got it. It was in the company of other plants, was nicely sheltered, not too much direct sunlight. The only thing I can think of was a few nights ago the temperature dropped very dramatically. I don't know what it dropped to but it was very low. Perhaps it didn't like that. It's the only thing I can think off. I have never seen leaves just drop so suddenly before. Do you think that was maybe it?

Your guess on that is as good as mine Gran :)
It doesn't seem to be enough, but if we knew all of the answers gardening would suddenly become very boring and this forum would be defunct :)
The very hot days we had at the beginning of June caused a well established Katsura of mine to suddenly shrivel up its leaves and die within a few days. It shouldn't have suffered from moisture loss because it had well established roots over many years etc, and neighbouring trees were unaffected
Ah well, such is gardening ................
