My cat is 20 years old, yesterday I went to the vets to get some flea treatment for him and she sold me Advantage spot on but today he is causing me concern, he isn't laying in his usual spot but has gone under my bed, he is drinking much more than usual and I am worried now. Can they react to this stuff?? :frown: Why do these things always happen when the vets are shut??

Hi Val ... I would be concerned also as I have a 19 year old. We have only even given ours Frontline Combo and not varied from that because yes, they can react to something different. What were you using previously? Why was something different recommended?

Our vets here have 24/7 numbers ... they don't charge for a telephone call, only a call out either to the home or surgery ... a bit pricey but if needs must! If there is no change tomorrow I would at least give them a call and explain the situation.

Thinking of you and hopefully you will have some good news to report tomorrow. xx

Hi Val,We were advised by our vet to change to Advantage from Frontline as we were finding the Frontline wasn't having much effect and within a week of putting it on our cats they were scratching like mad and I was seeing the odd flea in Poppy's fur where she has a lot of white fur.

We trotted down to our local large pet store of which most towns have one and got a box of advantage. The chap selling it to us had to take all our details on a mini ipad and Mr Kandy had to sign a box on the ipad, and then the chap (he has to be licensed to sell it to us)got the box out of a locked cupboard.

Anyway,we paid for it and went off home.At home I happened to look at the front of the box and read that it could only be used on any cats weighing over 4kg.I went straight away to Mr Kandy and asked what weight roughly our cats were.He told me they weigh less than 4kg so I said I thought we had got the wrong type as our cats are not that heavy.

The next evening we took the box to the nearest store of the same name and had to speak to the manager who told us that by rights she couldn't exchange the product, but because we had been given the wrong box for our lightweight cats she would this time let us have the correct box and was going to contact the other store to give them a ticking off for not asking what weight the cats were.

Evidently if you give too high a dosage for the weight of cat,the cats can have an adverse reaction to it and can be seriously ill.Did your Vet weigh your cat to make sure she was given the right dose?If you are at all worried then you need to urgently contact your vet (There should be an emergency number you can ring for your vets)to ask for advice.

I haven't used the Advantage yet as we haven't been long giving our cats the last lot of Frontline and want the Frontline out of their system before we swop treatments.

From what we were told by the vet, there is an epidemic of fleas this year due to a hot summer so the fleas are breeding non stop and the Frontline is losing its ability to work on them.

Please get some advice Val and let us know how you get on....

The Advantage is actually the first flea treatment he has ever had!! he just never gets bothered by fleas but this year he has been scratching and looking through his white fur I could see the flea droppings which is why I bought the Advantage, I didn't have puss with me so no she didn't weigh him but he too is a very lightweight cat and I think that the dose was too big although she (the receptionist that is) kept saying that it would be fine. I picked him up a little while ago and was cuddling him and he was purring loudly so I'm just not sure at this point what I want the vet to do.

            Hi Val

Has he eaten any food today ? , you need to ring the vet , was it the 40 or 80

as the 40 is for small cats and the 80 for large

The product is bitter tasting and salivation may occasionally occur if the animal licks the application site immediately after treatment

I would imagine they would bathe the cat asap as I know if they are left out in heavy rain and they get a good soaking it doesn't last as long

He'll pick up soon I'm sure. They can react, but mostly they're sulking.

I'm struggling with fleas too. They've even jumped onto my leg when I am sat at the table on the lawn.
I've tried several treatments. I was told that it's not just Frontline that is losing its ability to deal with them.

I use Frontline but with my pup have started using a natural product called Dynamite which the groomer used, I'm looking at heir products for cats. At the end of the day, spot on etc are chemicals & some have reactions to those chemicals. All I ask is please don't move onto Bob Martin products as they have been known to cause horrible reactions, with kidneys etc :(

Really pleased to hear that Val, what a worry for you though.. Some of these products do make them feel a bit under the weather for the first few hrs which then makes me wonder about what they are putting in them.. You might like to try some of these remedies Val.. http://everydayroots.com/flea-remedies-for-cats
