Seems bees have beaten the blue tits to occupy the bird house this year. I've seen a biggish one going in a few times (or several biggish ones going in once?) and I've seen a smaller one entering a few times too.

While I have no wish to disturb them (never did when something similar happened in my compost) does anyone have any advice on how best to avoid them eventually swarming? :noidea:

We had Bumbles in a bird box by the garage door and they were no problem, just don't stick your finger in the hole

It happened in my box a few years ago, as Jiffy says they are probably bumble bees so are noit a problem.
Never saw the going of mine, there in great numbers one day and gone the next.

I've only ever seen them in a bird box once and that was near to where @Jenny namaste lived. In that instance, the whole box was removed (by a bee specialist) but more because the people who lived nearby were worried about them being there as opposed to any genuine scare e.g. swarming.

I'm actually quite pleased they have found a home for this year; I shall watch (from a distance!) to see if they fill up the box ;)

I've always liked bees, especially bumbles, not even sure if they sting as I've handled them when trapped in the greenhouse and not had any problems.

I'm pretty sure that a bluetit box would not be big enough for honey bees and anyway, would they have appeared now?
Dont honey bees swarm and set up new nests much later?

I've stood next to a couple of swarms of honey bees on tree branches in the past and the word I would use is Awesome.:biggrin:

Aha! Something to look forward to then, rather than be scared of :dbgrtmb: (If I get stung, you owe me a pint! :th scifD36: )

I have had the same problem, I spent days being all excited about Mr & Mrs Blue tit moving in the bird box only to see a bumble bee literally chasing off the Blue tits  every time they tried to go in the box the bee came out or followed them in, I'm pleased mr Bumble bee has a home but I wish he'd have chosen somewhere else in the garden!

Tree bees? Bumble bees tend to nest in the ground. Either way, completely harmless and will be out of your way by September. They won't swarm & aren't aggressive. Bees are friends not foe. :)
