Hi guys and girls just a quickie... could I plant a climbing rose in a pot?

We had a lovely climber called 'Golden Showers' at our old house and was wondering if one would grow well in a pot?
    Thanks in advance [IMG]

Hi Helen, long time no see ;)

As you know I am not a rose gardener but my dad had loads of them. (Yawn). He even had one called golden shower, very nice, very....yellow. I think you'd be OK for a short time (in gardening terms). But a proper rose is meant to go in the ground. If you only want it for a few years then go ahead (don't forget to feed it regularly) but if you want a genuine rose....... [IMG] [IMG]

Maybe a rose expert will contradict me (they usually do) but if you want my dad to be spinning in his grave..........

    Hello there Stranger!

Thanks John not really keen of one going in the ground Bob hates roses something rotten I don't know why but he does!

Had a couple in the side garden when we moved in and he ripped the poor things up without asking me...just thought I could move it about when he gets fed up with it!

Helen, when it comes down to it, you can grow anything in a pot. You just have to remember that they need a lot more looking after, watering and feeding etc,
    than ground bound plants. David.

Thanks for your advice Woo lots of information there just ideal for me.

One more question if I may will there be room in a very large pot to place a clematis in with the rose or not?

David I'm trying to grow lots of plants in pots that way I'll be able to move then around and get the best 'show', although I do know I will not be able to move a climber.

I'm very lucky that although Bob might not like some of my plants he does a marvellous job watering and feeding them for me, so I might be able to swing it with Bob ....will have to wait and see!
    Thanks again guys.

Hi Helen The Rose I would use would be a bare rooted one,and there should be Ideally at least 18 inches
to 2 feet between the Rose and the Clematis all ways plant the Clematis at an angle / to the wall. This should prevent Clematis Wilt. These are only my personal views on my own observations and
    past work.Hope this helps.
