    Hi

We have just moved to Shetland and are new to gardening. We have one and half acres and a large area which was once a vegetable plot but it hasn't been touched for over a year.

We also have a geodesic dome greenhouse and a poly tunnel in a bad state of repair.

    We have chickens.

We would like to get started on our vegetable plot but do not know what to do first.

    Any basic advice really appreciated.
Apologies for our lack of knowledge but we are keen to learn and get growing.

    :what:

    Welcome to Gardeners Corner:)

If its not been touched then first thing is to dig it over and, if you can get hold of it, dig some well rotted manure in. Failing that, any organic matter available.

You need to strip any turf off & stack it to rot down. You can dig that back in later or use it for potting loam.

As you dig, take out any perenial weeds like dandelions, couch grass & bind weed roots, you'll soon learn to recognise those.

Maybe some other members could put a pic up of some for ID?

I think local knowledge will be of great help. How about seaweed for composting and mulch? Cheers, Tony.
