Not sure what it is all about.
    Are the Taliban Afghani people?
Or are they like we were invaders.

The other thing I dont understand is, our troops were supposedly there training an Afghan army to defend them from the Taliban.
Its been going on for years, so what happened to the Afghan army?

    Any thoughts.
I'm not sure its all our fault.

Taliban are an Islamist group - they are Afghan. They harboured Al-Qaeda - who the West were after due to World Trade Centre atrocity - they used force to control the Country - which is why the West went in there. To get rid of Al-Qaeda and the Taliban and to train up the Afghan forces to keep the Taliban out.

From what I can see - the Afghan forces didn't fight and corruption was rife - the money the West put in was not being used as intended. West have funded the Afghan Gov't - but that has now ended. Taliban get their funding from crime and drugs.

So from one perpective the West achieved their objectives - we ousted Al-Qaeda and the Taliban and gave the Afghans the tools to defend their country - if they applied themselves. When it came to the crunch they weren't able to.

The 450+ UK soldiers who lost their lives - did not do so in vain - the West achieved what they set out to do - we got rid of Al-Qaeda and we gave the Afghans the means to defend themselves - the rest was up to them.

The was no ideal time to withdraw - because the Afghans didn't stand up for themselves.

Speaking from zero knowledge, the Taliban were there all the time and probably formed 99% of the army and ordinary folk. Hence why territory and cities were more or less handed back with little bloodshed. They have just been waiting for the Americans to go and take over everything left behind. It's a big humiliation to Biden, reminds me of when Saigon fell.

It's such a shame we got suckered in and sacrificed our own soldiers for nothing.

The Afghan army just don't have the discipline of a well trained army. It was all token gestures to get dollars and bragging rights.
The consequence is that when the US led the retreat (withdrawal), which Trump began as a quick win policy and Biden endorsed as he gets to stop funding Afghanistan, is that the army wet themselves and put up little resistance. Also not helped by their leader escaping at the earliest possible moment to another country.
Expect to see Russia and China in bed with the Taliban in short order. The country is rich in rare resources, largely neglected due to the instability of the country and the lack of need. Now new tech demands rare earth elements; the Taliban will gladly exploit or be exploited, in return for high tech arms, factories etc
Personnel that worked with the US, UK forces etc are currently being shot on their doorstep.

            That's where you are wrong.
The biggest mistake is to view the Afghans as one nation and one people - which they are not. They are a conglomerate of different families, clans, tribes and even beliefs which are tied with each other by decades of spoken treaties, arranged marriages, trade and promises. Even the uniting factor of "being all muslims" is only true at first glance. Irishmen have been killing each others for a long time although both are christians.

So what happend after the allied western forces left the country was the following:

            1. The old government, which was mostly forced to succeed by Western forces almost instantly lost all credibility

            2. People went back (if they ever left) to the old system of bargaining, promising and legalization in their immediate vicinity.

            3. People in the army didn't want to get themselves or their families shot only to give the coward of a president more time to gather his belongings before escaping. So they returned home to their clans, families and duties, took what they could carry and decided their talents would be much more appreciated serving them instead. Blood runs thicker than water after all.

Extremist muslims who impose sharia law on everyone which amounts to most of their women denied any reasonable freedom as i understand it.
A bit like our rules in pagan times..Ducking stools, Burning 'witches' etc etc.
It's all about control and no doubt terrifying for the population which has enjoyed a certain amount of freedom.
If we are allowing 20,000 to come here, I'd make that mostly females, because they are the one's that are gonna cop it with these neanderthal bullies.

We should stop getting involved in situations that are nothing to do with us and just be completely non-interventionist from now on, simple as that. I thought the point initially was to get the terrorists who caused 9/11, we lost 67 of our citizens then and ended up losing 454 more of our people who were British troops in Afghanistan, what bloody sense does that make? And how many of our veterans will end up dealing with severe psychological issues now because they feel they and their comrades sacrificed so much or died in vain?

The same is true of any country, they all have clans, belief systems, internal conflict etc. That's where the discipline comes in and the Afghan army failed, or we failed to instil, this. Not a shock as it takes many decades to accomplish. The professionalism just wasn't there but this outcome was known well in advance.

Whatever you do, it won't be right.

Invading a country and establishing a new system is just as wrong as watching the people massacre each other.

The only way is to leave them to their lifestyle, ignore the gruesome things happening and hope they will change at some point in the future.

It's the sad truth. All you can do is nudge and support those working towards a better future, but the people themselves have to do the work.

"As long as they keep it there and don't assume they can follow those rules when they come here is fine by me."

England is a multicultural country now Pete, they lack the slightest incentive to "keep it there". :frown: What is there left for them here to integrate into when there is clearly no longer an urge to maintain a distinct English/British culture? :dunno:

Nick someone is going to come out with the old saying, that we never had culture and we have always been a bunch of mixed race mongrels .

We are multi cultural? Yeah you can't change things by just saying it .

Some parts of certain cities here appear to be a monoculture.

I agree with a lot being said here. I think religion has no place outside of a church, synagogue, temple, whatever...

I see the video footage of people running across the airport tarmac. People. Well, men and I think there was a female or two. One man was pulling along his two sons.

We have a constant issue with groups wanting and pushing to make sharia law part of our justice system and enforceable. :yikes: So far it has been snuffed, thank goodness!

I too wondered why all of the training turned out to only produce sprinters. Running away from the taliban seems to be what they learned.

Yes, we had a charming chap here going with the name of Hookie.. (aka Abu Hamza) If i remember rightly he was living in a council house rent free whilst preaching his radical rubbish to the locals and vehemently slagging our Western culture.
He stated that he wouldn't be satisfied until the flag of sharia law was flying over Westminster.
