African daises

We saw these at the market the other day and purchased 3 of them that were in bloom. We have well drained soil and sunny area for them. We are keen to obtain a few more of them, but if growing from seed we are assuming it is too late in the year to start them off. Is this correct?

Secondly what would be the best way to protect them over the winter. It has been suggested that we take some cuttings, but unsure of this has never one it before. Another suggestion was using an open ended cloche tunnel. To be honest until we looked up African daises we had never heard of cloche tunnels as total amateurs in the garden.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks?

That is correct. Coming from Africa we have always called them African daises. Anyway we cannot pronounce their Latin name. LOL!

 

Its just that a lot of daisies come from Africa so best to nail down just exactly the ones you are referring to.
The modern ones you see being sold are likely to be grown in nurseries from cuttings, there are lots of special ones on sale these days.

You can propagate from cuttings your self, probably best done in spring from a plant lifted in late autumn and kept frost free over winter, personally I dont bother and just buy new plug plants when they become available in March and grow them on in the greenhouse for planting out after the last frost.

 

As you gather at present we are amateurs at this gardening lark so every day is a learning day.

 

Oh come on, you joined in 2010, you must have moved on.

 

At that time we did very little gardening and then sort of lost interest with work commitments etc, but now well retired so time on our hands.

 

In amongst the other flowers are the African daises. They are the rather large daises.

 

Its simple once you have done it.

I can see Gerberas in the photo, but not Osteospermums. IME Gerberas are more tender and not worth trying to keep over winter, but this link might help...Gerbera

 

A few years ago they were selling a strain of Gerbera and they were saying they were hardy, they weren't with me, but they were a bit tougher than they used to be.
