after thirty five i need to improve the lawn. Help!!

I have had this lawn which is aprox 60 * 18 Mtrs for thirty five years man and boy and have never done much too it. Until last year when I used a weed,moss killer with a lawn food. It did the intended job but I did not scarrify and then the drought turned it yellow leaving the grass fairy thin and the weeds returned and the moss.
My instincs tell me to feed as soon as the grass starts to grow well and ignore the weeds apart from hand pull. Just try to improve the grass quality which in turn will force out a lot of the weeds. Then when the lawn is well fed and stronger kill the remaining moss and weeds.
