    Hallo my lovely GC mates.
    I have just ordered a TEFAL Airfryer and I know diddly squat about using it.
    In view of our GC quest to save money and energy, I've started this thread.
    Any guidance, helpful tips and recommendations would be appreciated,

    Hi Jenny, I think you mean Air Fryer. I have had mine, a Philips for many years, ten or more. I got a pan to put in mine. You can do all sorts of potatoes in it, I particularly like Lyonnaise ... slice potatoes and onion, rinse in salted water, layer, season lightly, add a blob of butter and cover with milk. Cook for about 20 minutes. Soups and stews are quick and easy. We do small roasts and meatloaf is brilliant. We wouldn't be without it in a hot country where you don't want the oven going.

      I listened to a bbc podcast and admit I'm still none the wiser, how do these work and is there a difference between these and a halogen oven?

        The bbc podcast concluded that air fryers saved over half compared to a conventional oven and the food tasted about the same. I think they are good for a couple of people any more (bigger portions) or doing vegetables at the same time you're better off using an oven. Just repeating what the podcast said, I have never used one.

        I admit it is limited, but vegetables can be done on the hob or microwave, which we do. There are family sized ones I believe but they are certainly ideal for two. :smile: If you don't bake your own bread, they do part-baked rolls in 2-3 minutes.

          Think think they work similar to a fan oven @JWK blowing hot air about.

          I cooked frozen chips / hash browns and waffles in mine . I tried proper chips in it before which didn't go well. They is quite a bit you can cook in them but I am not much help I am not much of then meal person, I might try and cook a pie in it next.

          It cheaper to run than the oven by 30p per hour approx but its smaller . It is faster than my fan oven though , potato waffles for example take around 22mins in the oven / 13mins in the air fryer

            A microwave must be the cheapest way to cook, a jacket potato for example only takes 10 minutes but it doesn't have that nice crispy skin. I wonder if the air fryer is better in that example.

            You can cook your potato in the micro then pop it in the air fryer to crisp ... or dry fry for a couple of minutes.

            We have done Fray Bentos pies in them ... then the tins are great for home made pies (I only put pastry on the top). For chicken pies, cook breast in micro, flake up in tin of mushroom soup, add frozen peas and sweet corn, add cumin to taste, put in tins and top with pastry.

                If you have a combination one, they usually are capable of giving you crispy skin as well. Our one (affectionately known as Chernobyl 2) does a fantastic job of baked spuds with lovely crispy skins and you don't even need to tell it size, weight, time or anything, it just works it all out.

                The dauphinoise potatoes that it does too are about the best I have ever had. We love our microwave.

                  Preheat Fryer to 180c

                  Meatloaf, I use ...
                  500g ground meat (we use Aldi mixed beef and pork)
                  Chopped Onion (I like a lot)
                  Chopped Red Pepper
                  Salt & Black Pepper to taste
                  Splashes of Worcestershire Sauce
                  Cumin to taste
                  Anything you like to taste

                  Mix all together and shape into a dish, cover top with Ketchup and place into Fryer and cook for 20 minutes. Remove and let rest for five minutes. De-lish ... that is for two meals for the two of us. Makes a nice sandwich cold too.

                    Ours has a radiant element in top, a conventional element somewhere (rear or bottom I think) in the cavity and then of course the magnetron for the microwave portion. Ours is a Panasonic, the second of these we have had in a couple of decades or so, and both have been brilliant machines. Admittedly, not cheap (they are circa £400) but well worth their money over ten years or so.
