My father in law bought an 'Apache' F1 variety of chilli as a young plant, but now it's fruiting, the chilli's are not thin and red as you would expect, they are like a sweet pepper size (but pointed shape), and a really pale green, like almost white.

Is this the result of a hybrid gone wrong, or could it be a wrongly identified plant?

    Hi NG,

They will go red when ripe, sweet peppers start off green too.

Don't forget to give a liquid feed while its fruiting:thumbsup:

Sorry, I shouldn't have mentioned red. They are a very pale green, almost white. By contrast, the others are a very deep green, and all grown in same conditions.

    Aah, I see, sorry.

They should all be true to type being F1s. But after watching that programme on Genetics last night, i'm not so sure:what:

If the plant looks at all sickly I would suspect a virus or root aphids, if not then let it grow & see what happens.

No one has touched it after rolling a cigarette have they ?

No, no-one smokes. Plant looks healthy all in all, it's just the chillies are a strange colour. They've been put in a pot, in the 'conservatory' attached to the house, with new compost. I'll get a photo or two when I'm there tomorrow.

As promised, photos. First two are of the suspect plant, final one is what the rest of them are like, for colour comparisons.

I'm stumped, they're the strangest Apache chilli's I've ever seen?

    Any suggestions?

Although Apache can come in a variety of sizes that one doesn't quite look like it. The colour can change to almost anything so just wait a bit.

Just trying to think a bit laterally, as there are thousands of different varieties and it is pure guesswork, a chilli that I know that begins with A (same as Apache) and usually starts of your sort of colour is the Aji chilli.

I'd let it grow and wait to see how it turns out. You may be on to a winner. :dbgrtmb:

Thanks for your reply Shiney. I do wonder if the labels have been mixed up. The nursery is usually decent with labelling. It's interesting nontheless.

I did wonder if it was down to the compost (father in law used ericaceious for some reason?!), but the other plants are in it too, it is just this one plant that seems a little out of place.

I think you've just been given the wrong plant. Variety is the 'spice' of life. :heehee:
